German Heritage society
The German Heritage Society was founded in 1986 by Fort
Wayners Ken Scheibenberger, Jim Sack, Bob Mosser, Dan Witucki and Dave
Riethmiller as a vehicle to raise funds for Germanfest. The GHS goal then and
now is to promote German culture through educational, social and economic
activities.
Over the years since its inception, the German Heritage
Society has:
- published works now held by the Allen County Historical
Society and the Indiana State Historical Society concerning the history of
Germans in Indiana;
- founded an educational program which now teaches German
language and culture to children in 15 area schools;
- established an exchange program in 1990 with Gera,
Germany, a city in former East Germany, which has since become a Sister Cities
International project. The GHS fully funds and directs the program in
cooperation with the Fort Wayne Sister Cities Committee, the City of Fort
Wayne, and the administration of the City of Gera;
- established a scholarship fund for area German language
students;
- provides travel grants to groups and individuals
visiting Gera; and
- helps to plan the cultural events which make up
Germanfest.
